Newton County Historical Society

The Newton County Historical Society was founded in May 1971 by Mary Gene Campbell Elliott) who also served as its first President.  The stated purpose of the Society is to preserve, investigate, study and disseminate the history of the county and to share that information with the public as well as with other cultural and educational institutions.

Major projects started just one month after its founding, when Mr. Charles Jordan donated the Brick Store, the oldest brick building in the county, to the Society. Restoration has been ongoing and the property is currently in good condition and climate controlled.

A Historic Site Survey was completed for the Georgia Historical Commission with 72 houses and buildings included. A tour of homes was conducted for over 20 years.  In 1974 a Historical District in Covington was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.  In 1988 a History of Newton County was compiled and published. The book is available through the Society or at the Chamber of Commerce. The Society provided furnishings for Gaithers Plantation.

Present membership consists of approx. 150 members.  The archives committee is busy accessing materials in order to provide research opportunities for historians and genealogists. Several other projects are in the works which will be outlined on the Membership and News section.
